As I was leaving the SOHI Saturdae event back in September '07, a teenage boy called out to me from his porch. I had my headphones around my neck and my recorder was hanging at my waist. "Interview me," he said. "OK," I called back. Donyel hadn't really expected me to comply, saying "I didn't think you'd really do it" as I approached him. We talked about music, school and people's stereotypes about adolescents. Then he tried to convince another friend to join us. "He freestyles," Donyel said. It took a little coaxing, but he finally got CJ aka Big Boy Blue to get off his cell phone.
CJ wouldn't exactly freestyle for me, but he did show me a poem he had typed into his cell phone. And then he read it for me:
